There were few reports regarding the effect of government paid denture for low-income elders despite that the project was launched in 2002. Therefore, this study intended to investigate the effect of the project and suggest public health policies for the better development of the project. 14 telephone survey questionnaire regarding age, gender, use of denture, denture discomfort, frequency of visit to dentist for after-cares, benefits of denture, nocturnal denture wearing, general health status, denture hygiene practices were completed by 105 out of 122 elders selected for the project in two counties of Seoul and Pusan. Most (89.5%) were using dentures despite half of them had difficulty in adapting to new denture. Lack of stability, chewing difficulty, and pain during chewing were the main discomforts. However, 86.3% of them reported the improvement of esthetical confidence and 77.5% of the patients chewed better. 18.6% of them wore denture during sleeping and only 49% of them cleansed after each meal. The most popular method of cleaning dentures was brushing. Most (88.4%) had general health problems. 72% of them visited dental office for after-cares. Further studies using sample of elders reside in middle and small cities and dentists participated in the project are suggested.
